Villagers of Bijapur district where unprecedented rains claimed 34 lives are all praise for local MLAs who have rushed to the help of the needy without waiting for release of funds from the district administration.
A social worker, who has been camping in Bijapur city for the past five days, said “Appa Saheb Pattanashetty, a city MLA has distributed over 3,000 blankets to the affected and set up four gruel camps, whose operations he is monitoring himself.”
According to official sources, over 6,000 families have been hit by the rains in Bijapur city. Around 700 villages were affected.
In Devarahipparagi constituency in the district where over 20,000 families have been affected, the local MLA A. S. Patil Nadahalli has distributed over 100 quintals of rice and pulses to the eight relief camps opened by the government, Baburao Kulkarni, who works for an NGO, said.
An official said Bableshwar constituency MLA, M. B. Bableshwar has supplied kerosene and food to relief camps. As Chairman of Bijapur Liberal Development Education Society, he has also contributed Rs. 25 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, he said.
Relief also poured in from Suttur Mutt and Pune-based Jain Seva Samaj in the form of clothes and blankets, officials said.
