Irked by the low quality of road work taken up by the City Municipal Council, MLA G.H. Tippareddy has instructed the council engineers to stop the payments to contractors until they maintain a good quality of work.
Speaking to reporters, after paying surprise visits to construction work at different parts of the city here on Wednesday, he said that it is the responsibility of engineers to see that the quality is maintained. “If the officers concerned fail to maintain the quality, the people will blame MLAs and other elected representatives for not providing proper facilities. So the officers should understand the situation and act accordingly,” he added. He added that under the Nagarothana Yojana the government is planning to spend Rs. 1 crore per kilometre and the funds under the scheme should be completely utilised before the end of March. If the officers concerned fail to maintain quality of work, the government will not release funds in the next fiscal.
The MLA also warned the CMC officers of disciplinary action if they fail to rectify the loopholes in the road works already taken up in the city.
