Seven persons have been arrested in connection with it

December 29, 2012 04:12 am | Updated 04:14 am IST - Hassan:

A 15-year-old girl has allegedly been gang-raped over a period of nine days in Hassan. The incident came to light on Thursday night after the victim reached a child care home run by the Department of Women and Child Development, in Hassan and narrated her story to the members of the district Child Welfare Committee.

The victim, native of a village in Alur taluk, was allegedly brought to Hassan city by her distant relative, Putta, on December 19 promising her a job in a cloth shop. Putta and his friend, Raja, allegedly raped her in the forest area in Kattaya hobli and left her at the new KSRTC bus-stand.

Later, she came in contact with Dayanand, a shopkeeper when she went to get her mobile phone recharged. Dayananda and several of his friends took her to a cinema and a lodge, and raped her repeatedly for the next few days. Ms. Madhura, chairman of the Child Welfare Committee, told The Hindu that the case of gang-rape came to light when the victim reached the child care home with an application seeking shelter.

“Initially she told us that she wanted to stay in the child care home as her father had been torturing her. We contacted her parents over phone and asked them to come to Hassan. Meanwhile I continued to make inquiries to find out how and when she left her home. After some time, she revealed what had happened with her since December 19”, Ms. Madhura said.

The committee informed the police about the incident.

Ms. Madhura opined that the story of the father torturing her was only a ploy to get shelter in the child care home. “When we questioned her parents, they said they did not want to take her back as they were fed up of her”. The victim is now in the child care home.

Superintendent of Police Amit Singh, in a press conference here on Friday, said that seven people had already been arrested in connection with the gang-rape incident.

The arrested have been identified as Putta, Dayanand alias Daya, Madhu, Dileep alias Chinnu, Dileep, Mohan and Shekhar. “All arrested persons are residents of Hassan. Among them, two are pursuing degree course and three are autorickshaw drivers. They are all in the age group of 18-25. At least three or four more accused are absconding”, he said.

The Superintendent of Police said that her parents had not filed any complaint with the police though she was missing since December 19. The victim has been subjected to a medical examination on Friday as per Section 164 A of the Cr.PC.

Hassan Extension Police have registered an FIR under Sections 366 (A) (Procuration of a minor girl), 376 (Rape), 342 (Wrongful confinement) of the IPC, Clause 3 (XI) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocity), Act 1989, and the Protection of Child from Sexual Offences Act 2012.

The accused will be produced in court on Saturday, the Superintendent of Police added.
