Minor driving truck raises questions

7-year-old girl ‘attempts a world record’ at Idgah Maidan

Questions are being raised about the propriety of a 7-year-old being allowed to drive a lorry even though it was ostensibly for a ‘record’ in Mysuru on Sunday.

The girl drove the lorry at the Idgah Maidan and the event was publicised as an ‘attempt for a world record’ to be documented by an organisation issuing such certificates.

The girl’s father who spoke to a section of the media described his daughter as a prodigy and who learnt to drive vehicles at the age of 3. “She aspires to be a fighter pilot,” he said.

The event was witnessed by scores of people and though the girl drove the vehicle on a ground, there was no barricading as a precautionary measure. People curious about the event were ambling all over the place and applauding the girl’s driving skills in violation of safety norms.

When contacted, a senior police officer said the RTO issues special permission limited only to the event for such occasions.

He said some people had sought permission from the police during Dasara to let the girl demonstrate her driving skills but it was denied. However, the girl had demonstrated some stunts during Chinnara Dasara as well.
