Minister happy over twin cities getting Centre’s Smart Cities project

Minister in-charge of the district Vinay Kulkarni expressed happiness over the Union Ministry of Urban Development selecting Hubballi-Dharwad under the smart city project.

Speaking at a meeting convened to discuss development works in the city here on Tuesday, Mr. Kulkarni said that the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) officials have strived to prepare a good proposal and get the smart city project for the city. Besides, the elected representatives of this region cutting across party lines contributed to the endeavour, he said.

In the backdrop of the city getting selected for the smart city project, the district administration would expedite the ongoing development projects, including the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) project. Steps have been taken to speed up the BRTS project and even the contractor too had been changed. Besides, directions have been issued to the officials to fill potholes and make the roads with higher vehicular density motorable. The administration would take steps to free the city from the stray pig menace within 15 days. Pig owners would be provided help to undertake alternative employment. The Old Hubballi region, which was facing water shortage due to depleting water levels at the Neer Sagar Lake, would be provided water from the Malaprabha reservoir, he said.

Deputy Commissioner S.B. Bommanahalli, HDMC Commissioner Siddalingayya Hiremath, local legislators and others attended the meeting.
