The district in-charge and Small Scale Industries Minister Ramesh L. Jarkiholi, on Thursday, directed officials of the Public Works Department to inspect all the bridges in the district and submit a detailed report on their condition within a week.
This comes after the bridge across Savitri river on the Mumbai-Goa highway near Raigad district in Maharashtra collapsed on Tuesday night.
He also warned of “blacklisting” the contractors if they are found to have compromised with the quality of bridges, particularly those constructed during recent years.
Later, when it was pointed out that a bridge across Markandeya river connecting Kangrali Khurd and Kadoli villages of Belagavi taluk was allegedly weak and trembled when buses and heavy vehicles pass through it, the Minister said he would ask the PWD officials to inspect it immediately.
On the failure of the PWD to complete the road-widening works between Basaveshwar Circle and Peeranwadi Cross by March i.e., before the onset of monsoon which only deteriorated the condition of the half-done road, the Minister again said he would ask the PWD officials to look into the matter.
Mr. Jarkiholi said that in addition to the establishment of a government super specialty hospital in the city, there were several other proposals before the State government. He would soon meet Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and request him to clear them expeditiously.
