The Union Government has given permission to the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS), an Autonomous Government Medical College in Mandya, to start postgraduate (PG) courses in three departments from 2015-16.

MIMS has received the ‘Letter of Permission’ from the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday to start PG courses in Physiology (2 seats) and ENT (one seat) and Ophthalmology (one seat), Pushpa Sarkar, Director of MIMS, said.

Online counselling

“We will shortly commence the process of online counselling for PG admissions in these departments,” Ms. Sarkar told The Hindu here on Wednesday.

A team from the Medical Council of India (MCI) had earlier visited the MIMS, inspected the infrastructure/other facilities, satisfied with the improvements and later recommended to the Centre on sanctioning four PG seats to the MIMS that was established in 2005.

With the Union government permitting to admit four more students, the total number of PG medical seats available in 11 departments at MIMS for 2015-16 has gone up to 17. Students can pursue PG courses in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic medicine, Community Medicine, Dermatology, ENT and Ophthalmology from 2015-16, Ms. Sarkar said.

MIMS is also contemplating on requesting the MCI for allotment of PG seats in OBG, Anaesthesia and Surgery from 2016-17.

The State has 10 government-run medical colleges, including the prestigious Mysuru Medical College (MMC) in Mysore and Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute. Of them, MIMS is the only government medical college that has received consent to start PG courses in 2015-16, an officer said.
