Slashing the procurement price of milk is inevitable as milk powder and other products are remaining unsold, Kadaluru Ramakrishna, chairman of Mandya Milk Manufacturers’ Union Ltd. (MANMUL), said.
Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Ramakrishna said the union has incurred a loss of ₹19 crore in the last three months because of poor demand for milk powder, butter and ghee. The union will restore/increase the procurement price in the coming days, he said.
The union has reduced the milk procurement price by ₹3 litre since October last year.
Protest on Jan 12
The district unit of Janata Dal (Secular) has urged the union to hike the milk procurement price by at least ₹3 a litre with immediate effect, and has decided to lay siege to MANMUL at Gejjalagere, on Bengaluru- Mysuru highway, on January 12 to highlight the demand.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, party leaders criticised the union for neglecting the interests of milk suppliers.
Farmers across the district have been reeling under the impact of severe drought for many years and have suffered heavy losses. Moreover, the price of cattle feed, fodder and other materials have gone up, they said.
