Taking serious exception to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam moving a resolution against the proposed Mekedatu project in the State Assembly there on Friday, which was immediately passed, members of various organisations staged protests here on Saturday.
The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) and Mekedatu Yojane Anushthana Horata Samiti, which led the protests, alleged that the neighbouring State was politicising the issue.
The State government should commence the project work immediately and complete it on a war-footing, samiti leader B. Shivalingaiah said.
The project was planned to preserve and utilise 40 tmcft surplus water for drinking and generating electricity. It would meet the drinking water needs of Bengaluru and Ramanagaram districts.
The samiti unanimously passed a five-point resolution to protect the interests of farmers in the State. It was resolved to urge the State government to immediately commence the dam construction related work.
An all-party delegation should be taken to New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and raise objections against the TN government, removal of silt in the lakes across the district, handing over of the maintenance of lakes to farmers and giving a strong reply to the Tamil Nadu government for its politically motivated moves against the project, were among the resolutions passed on Saturday.
The samiti said, it would send the resolution details to State government and Ministers concerned.
