A meeting of elected representatives from the Cauvery basin convened in Bangalore on Tuesday by the Mandya Zilla Raitha Hitarakshana Samithi to discuss the Cauvery issue sought the immediate suspension of release of water to Tamil Nadu.
The meeting urged the government to file a review petition in the Supreme Court on Wednesday and constitute a legal experts committee to protect the State’s interests as far as Cauvery and Krishna waters are concerned.
The meeting attended by Balagangadharanatha Swamiji of Adichunchanagiri Math, Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji of Suttur Math and Nanjavdoota Swamiji, MPs D.B. Chandre Gowda and N. Cheluvarayaswamy, the former Union Minister Ambarish, Minister for Forests C.P. Yogeshwar, MLAs and MLCs from the Cauvery basin and president of the samithi G. Made Gowda urged the people to intensify the agitation with a view to attract the attention of the Union government.
It said that farmers and elected representatives should assemble near Krishnarajasagar reservoir in Mandya on Wednesday to launch a symbolic, united protest.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Made Gowda said that farmers should to lay a siege to residences of Ministers and legislators, who were party to the government’s decision to release water.
Mr. Ambarish said that the order to release water had been passed without looking into the ground reality in the State.
‘Unscientific’
Describing the decision of the CRA as unscientific, he said that the plight of farmers due to drought should have been taken into consideration.
Assurance
Stating that the government would file a review petition on Wednesday, Mr. Yogeshwar told the meeting that the government, fearing legal complication, decided to release water.
