The Department of Internal Medicine and Community Medicine, Kasturba Medical College, along with the Department of Public Health, Manipal University would be hosting the Third International Non-Communicable Diseases Research Meet in Manipal on January 10 and 11.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Sudha Vidyasagar, Head of the Department of General Medicine, said that the meet would focus on addressing complex causes of non-communicable diseases and reducing the global burden would involve inter-disciplinary approaches. Nearly 200 delegates would be participating in the conference.

The Third International Non-Communicable Diseases Research Meet would be held in collaboration with the University of Alabama, Birmingham, Florida University, and the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation.

The conference will have international speakers such as Dale Williams from University of Florida, Cora Lewis from University of Alabama and eminent national faculty such as Usha Ayyagiri and Rakesh Sahay.

Another objective of this conference was to create awareness about non-communicable diseases which are causes of morbidity and mortality. Physicians and postgraduates from various parts of the country along with international faculty will be part of this research meet and will talk on various topics such as diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol.

The conference would bring together junior and senior faculty and academicians to discuss priorities in global non-communicable disease research. Research was important for clinicians because it linked the clinical experience and evidence base to the laboratory, which lent itself to statistical and trend analyses, collaboration, discovery and ultimately to positive impacts on patient diagnosis, care and safety.

The meet would also touch upon the importance of research and research methodology in order to encourage upcoming physicians to focus on conducting research in non-communicable diseases, Dr. Vidyasagar said.

K.N. Shivashankar, Professor, Department of General Medicine, and M. Dayananda, Medical Superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, were present.
