The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) officials have resumed their crackdown against sale of plastic that has been banned by the State Government.
The civic body officials, who raided a couple of shops and seized more than 3,000 kgs of banned plastic, are expected to launch a drive in the coming days covering even shops in Dasara Exhibition.
MCC Health Officer D.G. Nagaraju told The Hindu that a team of MCC officials raided a wholesale shop and a godown in Santhepet area on Thursday.
While more than 900 kg of plastic was seized from the shop, the raid on the godown yielded a stockpile of more than 2,000 kg of banned plastic.
The seized plastic included large quantities of bags, plastic cups, plates and spoons, besides Thermacol products, normally used during marriages and other functions.
Shop owner penalised
“We have seized the plastic materials stocked in the godown and sealed the premises. We have cancelled the trade license,” Dr. Nagaraju said. The shop owner from where 900 kg of plastic was seized has been penalised ₹5,000 and served with a notice.
The menace of plastic had raised its ugly head in the city during Dasara with a large number of establishments, including the stalls set up at Ahara Mela, using plastic with impunity, the MCC officials said. Hence, the MCC will begin carrying out surprise checks and raids across establishments in the city.
It has also discussed with officials of Karnataka Exhibition Authority (KEA) on the need to check rampant use of banned plastic in its premises. “We will be forming a joint team with officials from KEA to inspect the stalls at Dasara Exhibition grounds,” Dr. Nagaraju said.
It may be mentioned here that the State government has banned the manufacture, supply, sale and use of plastic carry bags, plastic banners, plastic buntings, flex, plastic flags, plastic plates, plastic cups, plastic spoons, cling films and plastic sheets used for spreading on dining table.
