S.K. Mariyappa of the Congress has been elected as Mayor.
In the election that was held here on Friday for the post of Mayor, Mr. Mariyappa defeated S.S. Satish of the Bharatiya Janata Party by a margin of 13 votes.
The post of Deputy Mayor was reserved for Scheduled Caste-woman. As Mangala Annappa of the Congress was the lone eligible candidate, she was declared elected unopposed as Deputy Mayor.
Party position
In the 35-member House, the Congress has 12 members, the BJP 11 (including three from Karnataka Janata Paksha), the Janata Dal (S) five, KJP four, Social Democratic Party of India one and two Independents.
Mr. Mariyappa polled 25 votes, including those cast from the members of Janata Dal (S), KJP, one from SDPI and one Independent. In addition, Sharada Poorya Naik of the Janata Dal (S), Shivamogga Rural MLA, and R. Prasanna Kumar, MLC, of the Congress, also voted in favour of Mr. Mariyappa.
Mr. Mariyappa, Mr. Satish and Narasimhamurthy, an Independent, had filed their nomination papers for the post of Mayor. However, Mr. Narasimhamurthy had withdrawn his nomination to support Mr. Satish.With this, the Congress-Janata Dal(Secular) coalition regime will continue in Shivamogga City Corporation for the third term.
Elections for Standing Committees were also held on the occasion. The following members were elected for the Standing Committees:
Standing Committee on Tax and Finance — Gopalakrishna, S. Rajashekhar, Syed Mazhar Javid, Rekha Chandrashekhar, Tarannum Banu and Shahista Banu.
Standing Committee on Town Planning and Improvement — S.N. Mahesh, Khurshida Banu, Nagaraj Kankari, Venkya Naik, S. Ramesh, Sunitha Yogesh Gowda and Malathesh.Standing Committee on Public Health, Education and Social Justice — Babu, Gowri Srinath, Lakshman, Mohan Reddy, Roopa Lakshman, Sunitha Annappa and H. Palakshi.Standing Committee on Accounts — Abdul Rehman, Surekha Muralidhar, Khwaja Garib Nawaz, Archana Ballekere, L. Manjunath, Vijayalakshmi Patil and Renuka Nagaraj.After the announcement of the results, the Congress activists expressed their joy over the victory of Mr. Mariyappa by bursting crackers. Mr. Mariyappa was later taken in a procession.
Meanwhile, K.B. Prasanna Kumar, Shivamogga MLA, told presspersons that the Congress and the Janata Dal (S) had joined hands in the city corporation to keep the BJP away from power.
