The long queue in front of Rangayana on Monday may have created the impression of applicants desperate for admission to the prestigious educational institution at the beginning of the new academic year.

However, the line was for admission to the children’s summer camp ‘Chinnara Mela’ that is conducted by Rangayana every year. Given the vast repertoire of activities included in the camp, Chinnara Mela has grown in popularity over the years.

Introduced to nurture latent talent among children and to expose them to outdoor activities, it brings out the best in the children who are imparted training in theatre, elocution, folk art and culture, rural games, singing, dancing, painting besides engaging them in a host of activities to widen their horizons and perspectives.

Say the parents, the month-long camp helps participants overcome their inhibitions in areas such as public speaking besides infusing them with more confidence.

Not surprisingly, about 300 applications distributed on a first come, first served basis were exhausted in less than 30 minutes when the counters opened. Scores of parents had lined up in front of Rangayana at the crack of dawn.

Chinnara Mela was introduced by Rangayana in 1997 and has been an annual feature since then.
