Manjunath did not qualify in prelims: UPSC

May 14, 2013 04:39 am | Updated 04:39 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Monday clarified that V.Y. Manjunath, a young civil services aspirant who committed suicide in Bangalore, had not even qualified for the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2012.

His family alleged that he had cleared the civil services exam but did not find his name in the final list released on May 3, and this drove him to end his life.

Manjunath’s body was found hanging in a construction site at Napoklu in Madikeri on Saturday.

The family claimed someone else’s name was listed against his roll number and that he had raised the matter with the commission but failed to get any response.

Noting with regret the suicide, the UPSC said the matter had been examined thoroughly and it was found that V.Y Manjunath s/o Yadav Murthy VP, had been allotted roll no. 538950 and was allotted the Bangalore centre for the 2012 prelims. He had taken the exam but did not clear it.

Manjunath’s name does not figure in the list of qualified candidates. Not having cleared the CS (P) Examination, 2012, he was not a candidate for the Civil Services (Main) Examination and accordingly could not have appeared for it and interview as claimed in a section of the press.

“It is also confirmed from our records that no candidate with this roll number [538950] or with this name [V.Y. Manjunath] had appeared for the CS (Main) Examination or the interview,” a statement issued by the UPSC said.

The commission received a fax message on 7/5/2013 from one G.S. Pradeep Kumar claiming to be a friend of Manjunath in which it has been said that in the result list announced by the commission the name of B. Ashwin against the roll no. 538745 has been indicated instead of Manjunath. No letter/representation was even received in the commission from the candidate himself.

“It is confirmed that as per the records of the commission, B. Ashwin s/o K. Bhaskaran having roll no. 538745 was a candidate and he has qualified in the CS (P) Exam as well as the CS (Main) Examination, 2012 and is figuring in the list of finally recommended candidates by the commission. Hence the result announced by the commission is correct and correctly indicates the name of B. Ashwin having roll no. 538745.”

The commission expressed its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
