The mango mela organised by the Department of Horticulture and the Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation will play a crucial role in providing different varieties of mangoes to people at competitive prices, Deputy Commissioner S.T. Anjan Kumar has said.
Speaking after inaugurating the mela here on Saturday, he said that mango was grown on 3,794 hectares of land with an annual yield of 30,000 tonnes.
Apart from local varieties, farmers in the district had started growing those that were popular in other States too.
The Horticulture Department should take steps to construct a cold storage to protect the quality of vegetables and fruits grown in the district, the Deputy Commissioner said.
Last year, steps were taken to protect tomato crop worth Rs. 7 crore, he added.
Horticulture Department Deputy Director Vedamurthy and Davangere Zilla Panchayat vice-president Usha Ashok were present.
