A man and his wife were hacked to death allegedly by his brother in the temple town of Deval Ganagapur in Afzalpur taluk of Gulbarga district on Friday night.

Although the exact reason for the murder was not immediately known, the police, who questioned the accused, Nabisab Daulsab Naikodi, suspect inter-religious marriage of the victims as the cause. It is also said that Nabisab was suspecting his sister-in-law’s character.

The police identified the victims as Ansari Daulsab Naikodi and Anjum Ansari Naikodi. Anjum, whose name was Anusya Bai, converted to Islam after marriage.

An inconsolable Daulsab, Ansari’s father, and Nabisab told presspersons outside the mortuary of the Government General Hospital here on Saturday that Ansari and Anjum (Anusya) eloped nearly three years ago. They lived in Pune for two years after marriage and returned to Deval Ganagapur seven months ago.

Both Ansari and Nabisab were working as drivers of private vehicles.

Mr. Daulsab said inter-religious marriage was not an issue at all as he and Anjum’s parents had accepted the marriage. Mr. Daulsab claimed that the brothers had no enmity.

He said he went near Ansari’s room on Friday night after hearing some noise. However, to his shock, he saw Nabisab coming out of the room holding a blood-stained axe.

Nabisab later surrendered to the police.
