A man was trampled to death by an elephant in Kudurangi village near Sakleshpur on Saturday.
Ramesh Achar, 60, was killed when he was returning home. He is survived by wife, son and two daughters. Following the incident, the villagers staged a protest against the increasing elephant menace and the Forest Department’s alleged failure to control it. They said that they had spotted elephants in the morning and alerted the officials. They said around 30 elephants were found roaming in the taluk. The department has not taken steps to capture them despite repeated demands, they said.
“We fear sending children to school. The government should relocate all the elephants,” said Supradeept Yajaman, zilla panchayat member.
Three people have been killed in elephant attacks in the last one month in Alur and Sakleshpur taluks.
Kirehalli Krishnappa, Hassan District Planters’ Association president, said all planters will stage a protest in front of the DC office if the government failed to take measures to stop elephant menace. He also appealed to Forest Minister Ramanath Rai to put an end to the menace.
