Man held for assaulting sub-inspector

The Mandya West police have arrested a man on charge the of assaulting a police sub-inspector in the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus-stand here.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening, when the police launched a drive to stop men from occupying women’s seats in KSRTC buses.

According to a senior police officer, the accused, identified as M.N. Ayyappa (52), was sitting on a seat reserved for women in a bus destined for Bengaluru from Virajpet. The accused was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when the bus arrived at Mandya. He refused to leave the seat and to pay Rs. 100 as fine. Later, he allegedly assaulted the officer, B.P. Byataraya Gowda, attached to the Mandya West police station, the police said.

Ayyappa is a native of Virajpet, presently residing near the 7th main road in Yelahanka. The accused was remanded him to judicial custody.
