A day after a woman committed suicide after allegedly making her two children consume poison at Nallur in Alur taluk, her relatives ransacked her house blaming her husband for the deaths on Wednesday.

Shankaramma (35) is said to have committed suicide after killing her son Ravichandran (9) and daughter Nayana (6) on Tuesday evening. Her husband Arun Kumar alias Harish has been absconding ever since.

On Wednesday, her relatives gathered at the family’s house and claimed hat Arun Kumar had been harassing Shankaramma over dowry. He is said to have beaten her up on Tuesday morning. Her relatives ransacked the house and set the window panes and furniture ablaze.

Before the couple’s wedding 11 years ago, Arun Kumar was married Shankaramma’s elder sister, who committed suicide within a couple of months of the marriage. It is said that Arun Kumar often had arguments with his in-laws and his wife for not offering him dowry for the second marriage.

The trio’s death came to light around 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday when neighbours found the dead bodies. Arun Kumar, who was in the village till evening, fled as people started gathering. Shankaramma’s brother Lokesh has filed a complaint with the Alur police.

The police said there were no signs of the children being forced to consume poison. It is believed that Shankaramma fed it to them before consuming it herself.
