Frustrated by prolonged court proceedings of his divorce case that did not yield desired results, a man attempted to commit suicide before newsmen after addressing a press conference at the Patrika Bhavan here on Tuesday.

Sharanabasappa Mane, a resident of Nimbarga village in Aland taluk, consumed pesticides before the media cameras after emotionally narrating his story. Taken by surprise, the journalists called a government ambulance service and shifted him to the district hospital attached to the Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences.

Before taking the extreme step, Mr. Mane, a father of three children, told reporters that he had applied for divorce from his wife and he did not get justice for the last three years despite having all evidence and records supporting his case.

“Our marital relationship is not going well. I have decided to get divorced from my wife. I have approached the traditional panchayat, police and even the court. Nothing happened so far. My wife is not ready for that. I have lost everything in my battle to get free from her. I am depressed and I don’t have anything left except committing suicide,” he said.

Then he picked up a bottle of pesticide from his pocket and consumed it. Even when he was being shifted to the ambulance, he was found showing a file of papers that he had claimed as pieces of evidence for supporting his case.

Later in the day, Superintendent of Police N. Shashikumar and doctors in the hospital said that he was out of danger.
