NIMHANS Director P. Satishchandra said the State government should make it mandatory for all hospitals with ICUs to report brain deaths to the Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka (ZCCK) for transplantation, on Thursday.
Speaking at a felicitation programme for families of organ donors organised by the ZCCK, Dr. Satishchandra, who is also the chairperson of the ZCCK, said such a system was being followed in Tamil Nadu.
Needy on the rise
“Lack of awareness and poor response from hospitals in reporting brain deaths is coming in the way of promoting cadaveric organ transplants. This has become a cause for concern for the ZCCK as the number of needy patients is increasing by the day,” he said.
To create awareness and encourage more organ donations, the ZCCK honoured donor families by planting a sapling in tribute of each of the 59 donors on Thursday. The programme, ‘Organ Donor – Nurturers to Freedom’ was held on the premises of NIMHANS.
Youngest donor
The organisers paid tributes to the youngest donor — two-and-a-half-year old Tamanna Mariam Renielson — who was brain dead following a road accident in which her mother was killed and father seriously injured a few years ago.
Mallikarjunaiah spoke about how he took the timely decision of donating the vital organs of his son.
“We learnt about our 27-year-old son Channabasavaiah’s decision to donate his eyes on Facebook. We honoured his decision and went a step ahead and donated all his vital organs,” he said.
