The much-awaited maintenance works on the sluice gates of KRS reservoir, constructed across the Cauvery near Srirangapatna, has commenced.
The Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd. (CNNL), to improve safety and operational performance of several structures of the reservoir, has taken up maintenance works on all sluice gates. The works, which commenced on Thursday, are likely to be completed by the second week of June, a senior officer at CNNL told The Hindu . The reservoir was conceived by Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar in 1911 and completed in 1931-32. The efficiency and strength of some of the decade-old sluice gates was diminishing, the officer said.
On Friday, consultants and technical staff of the Irrigation Department inspected the gates and identified leakage points.
“We have inspected wire ropes, rubber seals, electric cables, and the other materials at the reservoir. We will repair or replace rubber seals,” the officer said.
The reservoir had 173 sluice gates along 2,621 metres of the reservoir. Of them, six canal sluice gates, four turbine sluice gates and 48 automatic gates were closed a few years ago owing to corrosion and damages.
