The Sri Gayatri Vishwakarma Mahila Samaja has requested the State government not to bring Vishwakarma, a caste in the Backward Classes list, under the Scheduled Tribes (ST).
Samaja members submitted a memorandum in this regard to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, through Deputy Commissioner M.N. Ajay Nagabhushan, here on Wednesday.
Later, they spoke to media persons outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
Criticised“The ‘self-proclaimed’ leader of the community, K.P. Nanjundi, has been misleading the community as well as the State government by issuing immature statements.
Recently, he had demanded ST status for Vishwakarma community.
The government should reject his plea,” Lalitha Bhaskar, president of the samaj, said.
‘Not accepted’She criticised Mr. Nanjundi for “projecting” himself as the only person who is working for the development of the community.
“We condemn Mr. Nanjundi for demanding ST status for the community. We have our own association to fight for the overall development of the community. We have not accepted the Karnataka Vishwakarma Mahasabhe of Mr. Nanjundi as our association,” she said.
Special reservationHowever, the Samaja members requested the State government for a special reservation of at least seven per cent in all sectors for the development of the community.
Samaja’s vice-president S. Sunanda, general secretary M.V. Indira Shamachar, organising Secretary Tara Kumar and others were present on the occasion.
