Maharashtra government announced on Sunday evening that they would release of 1.5 tmcft of water from the Kalammawadi reservoir into Dudhaganga and Krishna rivers in Karnataka. This move comes after repeated requests from the State for release of water to fulfil the drinking water requirements of people along the Krishna.
According to Minister for Small Scale Industries and Sugar Prakash B. Hukkeri, the Maharashtra government issued an order to the authorities concerned to release 1 tmcft of water from Kalammawadi reservoir into Dudhaganga and another 0.50 tmcft of water from Rajapur barrage into the Krishna river from Sunday evening.
Accordingly, the irrigation authorities have started releasing water from the reservoir and barrage at the Karnataka-Maharashtra boundary immediately.
He said water was being released to meet drinking water needs of the village residents along the two rivers, including Chikkodi taluk in Belgaum district. He thanked the Maharashtra government and Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan for the help.
