Minister for Muzrai Kota Srinivas Poojary on Wednesday said the government would appeal before the Supreme Court to ban the practice of made snana at Kukke Subramanya temple in Dakshina Kannada district by upholding the Karnataka High Court order.
Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Poojary said the Karnataka State Religious Council had made changes in the practice asking the temple authorities to ask the devotees to roll over food offered to the deity instead of rolling over the leftovers of Brahmins. He said such a decision was taken following criticism by progressive thinkers against the traditional ritual.
He said the High Court had approved the decision, but the apex court had stayed the order asking the State government to allow the old practice. The Minister hoped the request to the apex court to uphold the High Court order would be approved.
Mr. Poojary said the government had successfully put an end to age-old practices such as nude worship, walking on fire and tying children to a poll on the temple premises. The Department of Muzrai, he said, had time and again made changes in rituals and practices that were not in tune with modern thinking.

He said 618 first division assistants and 678 second division assistants would be recruited within two months.
