A bull was killed by a leopard on the outskirts of Timlapura village in Shikaripur taluk on Saturday night.
The bull belonged to Dundi Siddappa, a farmer from the village. He had purchased it recently at a cost of ₹1 lakh for the bull taming competition, locally known as Hori Habba that will be held in the region after Deepavali. The incident occurred after the farmer was returning home from his land located on the fringe of forest.
A leopard that emerged from the forest attacked the bull. When Siddappa raised a hue and cry, farmers in neighbouring fields rushed to help. The leopard then escaped.
The bull had sustained serious injuries on its abdomen and midriff regions and died on the spot.
Following the incident, officials of the Forest Department combed the area but the leopard remained elusive.
Leopards have been frequently sighted on the outskirts of the neighbouring Baganakatte, Dindadahalli, Hitla and Esur villages in recent times.
Last week, a leopard cub that was separated from its mother in a plantation in Punedahalli village nearby was rescued by the department.
