Legislature session in Belgaum from Dec. 5 to 13

Decision said to be aimed at keeping MLAs away from Yeddyurappa party launch

November 07, 2012 04:15 am | Updated 04:15 am IST - Bangalore:

The State Cabinet has decided to hold a session of the legislature in Belgaum from December 5 to 13.

The session will be held at the Suvarna Soudha, which was recently inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee.

The Kumaraswamy and Yeddyurappa governments had held legislature sessions in Belgaum.

The Cabinet’s decision to hold the session during that period is said to be aimed at preventing BJP MLAs, MLCs and Ministers from attending the launch of Mr. Yeddyurappa’s party in Haveri on December 10.

Briefing presspersons on Cabinet decisions here on Tuesday, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri said the Cabinet authorised Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar to draft the State government’s opinion on granting special status to the Hyderabad Karnataka region, under Article 371 (J). The Centre had sought the State government’s views on the issue of special status.

It proposed to give powers to the Governor for taking up development works in the region. However, the Cabinet decided that powers with regard to education, jobs and development in the region should be vested in the State government.

The government studied the pros and cons of the Governor’s role in taking up development works in other regions in the country that have been given special status by the Centre, he said.
