The legal battle over the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council elections is all set to continue in the Supreme Court as multiple petitioners before the High Court who argued for the polls have said they will challenge the order.
Former BJP councillors, led by C.K. Ramammurthy, and Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Chandrashekhar, who impleaded in the case, confirmed to The Hindu that they would challenge the order in the Supreme Court.
BJP leader R. Ashok said the modalities of the party appealing against the High Court order were being worked out.
Mr. Chandrashekhar said the High Court order had larger negative imperatives to local governance across the country and had allowed a dangerous precedent. “Any government will now dissolve the local council days before its term ends to postpone the polls by six months. The legal position on this issue needs to be tested and the Supreme Court is the right platform,” he said.
Meanwhile, city in-charge Minister Ramalinga Reddy said the government was confident of its case for good governance and reform for the city and that the Supreme Court would also see its advantages.
