Lecture-demonstration by Pandit Vinayak Torvi today

The Manipal Centre for Philosophy and Humanities (MCPH), a constituent of Manipal University, will organise a musical lecture-demonstration titled ‘A brief sketch of Hindustani classical music’ by Pandit Vinayak Torvi at the Gangubai Hangal auditorium on its premises here on Friday.

A press release issued here said that Pandit Torvi would be accompanied by Ranga Pai on the tabla and Shashikiran on the harmonium. The lecture demonstration would be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

In his talk, Pandit Torvi will dwell upon some of the practical aspects of classical vocal music, especially ‘khayal’. He will bring to the table his perspective on a few elements of Hindustani music, such as the ragas, talas, lyrical compositions and gharanas (schools). He would also share his learning experience and his views on the guru-sishya-parampara.

Pandit Torvi would render Hindustani vocal at a separate programme to be held at the same venue from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Pandit Torvi is a renowned vocalist of the Kirana and Gwalior style of Hindustani music.

Training

He trained under Gayanacharya Gururao Deshpande and late Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. He has performed in all major musical conferences organized in the country and abroad, the release added.
