A large number of people attended the last rites of Basavaraj Channappa Patil (44) of Madaras Regiment held at his native village, Khanagaon of Gokak taluk in Belagavi district on Monday afternoon.
The body of the martyr Basavaraj, who was killed in a land mine explosion in Batalikr, Ladakh, on Friday night, was brought to the village by the Army personnel on Monday morning. A procession was taken out amidst slogans of 'Veer Basavaraj, Amar rahe.' His body was kept for public to pay their last respects.
Basavaraj Patil had served the army for 26 years and is survived by his parents, wife and two children.
Army officials from Madras Regiment, including Col. Nitin Kuttappa and from Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre, Belagavi, besides a large number of people from Khanagaon and adjoining villages paid their heartfelt respects to the hero.
