The late Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar was just 21 years old when he was crowned the ‘Prince of Mysuru’.
Exactly 41 years ago, he was crowned during Navarathri on Vijayadashami, a month after his father Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar’s death on September 23, 1974.
“My husband [Srikantadatta Wadiyar] had ascended the golden throne after his coronation as the tradition required so since Dasara festivities were on. But, on May 28, Yaduveer will only ascend the silver throne (Bhadrasana) and not the golden throne,” Pramoda Devi Wadiyar said on Monday.
The Kalyana Mantap, the venue of all auspicious events, including the late Srikantadatta’s ‘coronation’, will be the setting for Yaduveer’s ceremony.
“The tradition that is being practised by the Wadiyars since 400 years will be maintained for Yaduveer’s coronation. The rituals linked to the big occasion will be performed as per the tradition,” she said.
Ms. Wadiyar, who married the late Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar in 1975, said she could not witness her husband’s ‘coronation’. “I was told it was a low-key ceremony confined only to close family members and relatives since the last Maharaja had passed away the previous month,” she recalled.
