Kannada University, Hampi, and the Karnataka government will provide the Bellary district administration with land for setting up a permanent exhibition recreating Hampi’s grandeur as the jewel of the Vijayanagara empire during the reign of Sri Krishnadevaraya.
This was announced by Minister for Higher Education Arvind Limbvali at a function organised here on Tuesday by the government to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the coronation of Sri Krishnadevaraya and the 147th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
The State government urged the Centre to release a postal stamp and a coin in memory of the emperor, he said.
Minister for Tourism and Infrastructure G. Janardhan Reddy said that with the increasing value of iron ore and the arrival of internationally acclaimed industrialists, Bellary district would regain the glory it had lost with the end of the Vijayanagara empire.
Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa said the aim of the event was to encourage students to develop an interest in history.
Vishnukanth S. Chatapalli, secretary of the recently constituted Sri Krishnadevraya 500th Pattabhisheka Mahotasva Samithi, welcomed gathering.
K.M. Raghunandan, national organisation secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, spoke on the history of the Vijayanagara kingdom and the life and message of Swami Vivekananda.
Presiding, Shivajinagar MLA Roshan Baig suggested that the State government produce a film or a television serial on Sri Krishnadevaraya, on the lines of Sanjay Khan’s The Sword of Tipu Sultan.
