The Hindu District-in-charge minister Santosh Lad visited KIMS Hospital in Hubli on Saturday and took the medical officers to task for lack of cleanliness and hygiene in the hospital wards.

He was angry over the unhygienic condition of the hospital

Angry over the lack of cleanliness and hygiene in the KIMS Hospital wards, district-in-charge Minister Santosh Lad who visited the hospital here on Saturday took the medical officers and the cleaning contractor to task.

While KIMS authorities had been informed of his visit in advance, no attempts had been made to spruce up the institution. The Minister wanted to know why medical officers had failed to maintain cleanliness on the hospital premises and also lambasted the cleaning contractor, who he said had “failed to maintain hospital wards properly”.

Dustbins full of trash, unclean toilets and a foul smell greeted the Minister during his tour of the general and maternity wards. Accompanied by Prasad Abbayya, MLA, and Congress leader Rajashekhar Menasinakai, the Minister found an unhygienic conditions prevalent in several other wards, which only added fuel to the fire.

Mr. Lad said he was shocked by the apathy of medical officers at the hospitals, which catered to the healthcare needs of thousands of people from north Karnataka.

The anger of the Minister is quite reasonable as he is answerable to
the people and the Media. The callous attitude of the officials is condemn able. But before putting the entire blame on the officials,
the Minister and the Govt should ensure all the man-power and material
is made available to the concerned department and the errand
contractor should be divested of his contract.
Normally, during the visit of the Minister, at least, efforts would be
taken to keep the places clean. Even lack of it in this case shows
the level of respect the Minister/s enjoy and the power of the
officialdom. I believe, the deep rooted corruption and nexus between
the various tiers of administration and the contractors are the root
cause. Will somebody take steps to address this?
