With the Konkan region in Maharashtra receiving heavy rainfall, the water-level in the Krishna river continued to increase for the second day on Sunday.

As the Krishna is overflowing, 88,311 cusecs of water is being discharged from the Rajapur and Doodhganga barrages.

As the water-level rose in the river, another bridge was inundated in Chikkodi taluk severing road connectivity between Malikwad and Dattawad, according to Chikkodi Tahsildar Rajashekhar Dambal.

With that the number of road link cut off due to the floods has risen to seven.

According to officials in the Irrigation Department, two more crest gates of the Hipparagi barrage were opened to release water. On Saturday, 12 crest gates were lifted.

The officials have said that 75,100 cusecs of water was being released from the Hipparagi barrage to ensure safety of the people residing on the banks of the Krishna.

Road connectivity on Sadalaga-Borgaon, Jatrata-Bhivashi, Kallol-Yadur, Akkol-Sidnal, Karadaga-Bhoj and Bhojwadi-Kunnur stretches was severed on Saturday and that of Mallikwad-Dattawad on Sunday. The only solace for these villages is that they have alternative road connectivity to other villages.

Mr. Dambal said that various precautionary measures have been taken to face any eventuality caused by the rising water-level in the Krishna. Motorboats have been kept ready and steps have been taken to set up gruel centres in the taluk, he said.

The Krishna has inundated an old bridge in Khanapur severing yet another road link.

Meanwhile, there is an increase in the inflow in the Ghataprabha and the Malaprabha reservoirs. While the inflow at Ghataprabha is at the rate of 15,249 cusecs, it is at the rate of 5,382 cusecs at the Malaprabha.
