Governor Vajubhai Vala has taken swift action on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s petition seeking not to consider V.R. Sudarshan as chairman of the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC). The Governor, on Saturday, sought more information on the recommendation of Mr. Sudarshan and six other candidates as members of the commission.
Speaking to The Hindu , Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee confirmed that Mr. Vala had indeed sought more information on Mr. Sudarshan, who is a former Chairman of the Legislative Council, and other candidates whose names were recommended by the government as members of the KPSC.
The government is expected to provide the necessary details to the Governor on Monday.
The government had despatched a file with the recommended names to the Raj Bhavan on December 23.
Appeal by delegationOn Friday, a BJP delegation, led by State president Pralhad Joshi, had appealed to the Governor against the government’s recommendations.
The delegation alleged that the recommended persons had been chosen for the posts on the criteria of political affiliations and caste, rather than merit.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had visited the Raj Bhavan on Friday to extend New Year greetings to the Governor, who had returned to the city that day after a weeklong visit to Gujarat.
Mr. Siddaramaiah is said to have given an explanation on why Mr. Sudarshan was nominated, stating that the former MLC had quit the primary membership of the party. He also rebutted the BJP’s charges against some of the names recommended as members of the commission.
File returnedThe Governor has now returned the file, seeking more information.
