The Legislative Council was on Wednesday was adjourned till afternoon amid ruckus by members of the opposition over the murder of a student in Koppal district, allegedly by supporters of Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi.

Leader of Opposition K.S. Eshawarappa and the Janata Dal (S) leader Basavaraj Horatti urged Chairman D. H. Shankaramurthy to move adjournment motion on the Koppal murder case and the issue of corruption in the Lokayukta, respectively. But quoting the convention of the house, Mr. Shankaramurthy said the adjournment motion moved by the leader of opposition was given priority, hence, the motion moved by Mr. Eshwarappa would be taken up for discussion after the question hour.

However, Mr. Eshwarappa urged the Chairman to allow for a preliminary submission on the Koppal murder case. When the Chairman refused permission, Mr. Eshwarappa insisted on this matter and also alleged that the Government was trying to protect those involved in the murder. Objecting to his statements, the leader of the house S. R. Patil said Mr. Eshawarappa had to abide by the Chairman’s ruling and appealed to the Chair to commence question hour first.

Meanwhile, the house witnessed commotion as the members of the ruling party and the opposition parties began levelling allegations against each other and the BJP members entered the well of the house and staged a protest. When his repeated appeals to maintain order in the house did not yield results, Mr. Shankaramurthy adjourned the house for 15 minutes.

Later, when the house reassembled, Mr. Shankaramurthy said as per the decision taken at a meeting of the all party leaders and chief whips of the Congress and the BJP, it had been decided to allow discussion on the adjournment motion and cancel the question hour.
