Senior Congress leader and five-time MLA K.B. Koliwad was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

The post was vacant after veteran leader Kagodu Thimmappa was inducted into the Cabinet recently.

Mr. Koliwad, chairman of the Joint House Committee on lake encroachments, thanked members of all parties for ensuring his unanimous election.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Leader of the Opposition Jagadish Shettar and several members congratulated Mr. Koliwad.

Interestingly, the House has now four former Speakers – Kagodu Thimmappa, K.R. Ramesh Kumar, K.G. Bopanna and Jagadish Shettar.

Mr. Koliwad was elected to the House for the first time in 1972 and had served as the Minister and chairperson of various committees of the Lower House. He represents Ranibennur constituency in Haveri district.
