The Hindu- EDGE Career Counselling Session 2018 received an overwhelming response here on Saturday with 450-plus students and their parents attending the event and getting valuable information on the career opportunities available.
At the annual event organised by The Hindu Group at Bio Technology Hall of BVB College of Engineering and Technology, the speakers advised the students to understand their abilities and subsequently pursue their passion to make a career out of it.
Releasing the handbook “thenxt.step” brought out by The Hindu , Chief Executive Officer of Dharwad Zilla Panchayat Snehal R. told the students that without passion their careers would not take off. She said one should have the conviction to pursue one’s passion in order to succeed. Having cleared the Civil Services examination in her seventh attempt to become an IAS officer, Ms. Snehal explained to the gathering the preparations required for facing the examination and asked the students to be make an informed decision before setting out to achieve the goal.

Earlier, setting the tone for the event, Gopalkrishna Joshi, Professor of Computer Science, Dean (Curriculum) and Director, Centre for Engineering Education Research, KLE Technological University, Hubballi, highlighted the need to check whether they (students) had the attributes required to succeed in the field.
Through a PowerPoint presentation, Prof. Joshi introduced to the participants to the vastness of the field of engineering and technology and said students with 12 attributes including problem analysis, design and development of solutions, engineering knowledge, and finding solution for problems of society should choose engineering as a career.
Former Director of DIMHANS and psychiatrist Vinod Kulkarni enlightened the students on the field of medical sciences and said those who aimed to offer altruistic service should choose medicine as their career. Dr. Kulkarni also counselled the students on the issues to be kept in mind while making a choice of career out of umpteen opportunities.
CEO of CIGMA Foundation, Bengaluru, Ameen-e-Mudassar, threw light on career opportunities in fields other than engineering and medical sciences, and explained the dos and don’ts while making career choices.
Nodal Officer of Karnataka Examinations Authority Niranjan briefed the students about the modalities of CET counselling and NEET.
Nayeem of CMA IAS Academy, Belagavi, spoke on competitive examinations.
In the interaction that followed, the panellists answered queries from students and their parents on the various CET modalities, opportunities and scope in medical sciences, engineering, humanities, paramedical courses and other fields.
