Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd. (KIOCL), a Central government undertaking, is planning to make the company a global leader in pelletisation. KIOCL had diversified its business model after it stopped mining in Karnataka following the declaration of the national park in the Western Ghats, company chairman and managing director Malay Chatterjee has said.

As part of its diversified business it has helped other companies to set up pelletisation plants in different parts of the country, he said.

“We closed down our mining operations at Kudremukh. But KIOCL is still a profitable company, as we diversified our business. Today, we are in the business of setting up pelletisation plants. There is a dire need for technological knowhow across the nation for pelletisation. We are helping other firms set up pelletisation plants,” said Mr. Chatterjee at an event organised by the Indian Institute of Materials Management (IIMM) to felicitate national award winners. A release from the IIMM, quoted Mr. Chatterjee, “The long-term plan is to make the company an international hub for pelletisation.” The KIOCL, which is catering to the demands of domestic steel firms, such as, SAIL, ESSAR, Jindal and BPSL,was still paying dividends to the government.

“We expect top firms from across the world to send their ore to us for pelletisation. Our marketing team has been working on this. This will be an important revenue stream for the KIOCL,” he added.

Mr. Chatterjee was felicitated with the ‘Chief Executive of the Year’ award while T. Venkataraju, Engineer-in-Chief, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, received the award for ‘Best Supply Chain Practices in Water Management’.
