State-run Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd. (KIOCL) plans to enter the eco-tourism sector utilising its existing infrastructure at Kudremukh by investing Rs. 805 crore on the new project.
Foundation day
“To utilise the existing infrastructure created at Kudremukh and Chikmagalur, we are planning to enter into new business opportunities like eco-tourism,” KIOCL chairman and managing director Malay Chatterjee told PTI. “We have prepared the detailed project report and got the in-principle nod from the Karnataka government for the project. Investment of Rs. 805 crore will be made in the project in phases,” Mr. Mukherkee, who was in Bangalore to celebrate the KIOCL’s 38th foundation day, said.
The KIOCL had an iron ore mine in Kudremukh. But, mine, which was in operation for 30 years, was closed down in 2006 due to environmental issues.
The KIOCL now plans to use the existing facilities to develop the project on its 1,622 acres of land and has sought the State government’s approval for renewal of the lease for 99 years.
Eco-town
“We are keen on developing Kudremukh as an eco-town ... It is necessary that the land lease be renewed for 99 years at the earliest in favour of the KIOCL,” Mr. Mukherjee said.
The project, he claimed, would generate revenue for the State and create an additional employment potential for the local population.
