Karnataka unsafe state for women, young children: BJP Mahila Morcha

December 02, 2014 05:51 pm | Updated April 07, 2016 02:25 am IST - KALABURAGI

BJP’s Mahila Morcha has charged that under the Congress rule, the state has gained the dubious distinction of being unsafe for women what with cases of sexual offences against women and young children being reported every day.

The Mahila Morcha members formed a human chain around the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Chowk for more than 30 minutes, disrupting vehicular movement in Kalaburagi city on Tuesday. The members later courted arrests as they demanded resignation of Home Minister K.J. George for his alleged failure to ensure protection to the life and modesty of women and young children in the state.

As part of Jail Bharo agitation, Mahila Morcha members held similar protests across the state.

In a memorandum addressed to Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala and submitted to the district authorities, the Mahila Morcha members pointed out that 476 cases of rape had been reported in just six months. “Instead of protecting women, the Home Minister is making irresponsible statements.”

The Mahila Morcha took serious exception to the CID report and termed the report as a political conspiracy to protect the culprits.

High drama was witnessed at the protest site when the members squatted on the road and refused to get into the police vans. They wanted the police to physically lift them and put them in the van. The police personnel who were present said that since it was a jail baro programme, the protestors should get in voluntarily. After some time the police personnel gave in and forcibly removed frontline leaders and pushed them inside the van and other women members followed into the van meekly.

Later all the detained protestors who were taken to the District Armed Police headquarters ground were let off after some time.
