The State government will accept fresh applications for issue of the below poverty line (BPL) ration cards from eligible families from July, said Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Food and Civil Supplies Dinesh Gundu Rao.

He was speaking at the Vijayotsava organised by N.A. Haris Foundation at Austin Town Corporation Grounds here on Sunday.

Mr. Dinesh Gundu Rao said that the government was aware that a large number of the below poverty line families do not possess BPL ration cards.

He said that the government will also scrutinise the complaints that several above poverty line (APL) families had managed to secure BPL cards, and withdraw and cancel the BPL cards taken by ineligible families.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said Bangalore need not struggle to find solutions to its problems now. “Having been in the Opposition, we tried to address certain issues, but now that we are at the helm, Bangalore city can be rest assured that the concerns of its people will be addressed,” he said. He reiterated that all the schemes and provisions made by his government for the poor and those belonging to minority communities will be implemented.

Mr. Siddaramaiah said that the government will also look into filling all the vacant posts of teachers, lecturers and principals in an attempt to provide quality education across the State.

Mr. Haris announced that the foundation would donate school bags and stationery kits to 20,000 poor students. A one-time scholarship of Rs. 1,000 will be given to 5,000 deserving students. Education and livelihood for the youth are priorities of the present government, he said.
