State government requests COMEDK to postpone counselling

July 01, 2013 02:15 am | Updated November 16, 2021 10:22 pm IST - BANGALORE:

Faced with a delay in commencing seat allotment in government and government-quota medical seats, the State government has written to the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) to postpone its seat allotment process, scheduled to begin on July 2.

COMEDK counselling usually does not happen before the counselling by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) for Common Entrance Test (CET) rank holders.

Speaking to The Hindu on Sunday, Medical Education Minister Sharanprakash Patil said the government had written to COMEDK on Saturday in this regard.

The government is yet to announce the final seat matrix, without which the KEA cannot commence its counselling process.

The delay was caused by the Medical Council of India’s (MCI) decision to withhold admissions to 400 medical seats in five colleges. However, this decision was later reversed after the State government gave an undertaking promising that the MCI conditions would be fulfilled.

Dr. Patil said that details of seats in institutes, including Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences and Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences, were yet to be uploaded, only after which the seat matrix could be announced.

Mock allotment

The Minister did say that the KEA meanwhile had decided to begin the mock allotment process on July 2, and the real allotment process, tentatively, on July 12. “But we have time till September to finish medical admissions,” he added.

COMEDK officials were unavailable for comment.

However, students do not seem to have been intimated of the postponement of counselling, if any. A parent from Mangalore, whose son was to travel to Bangalore for the COMEDK counselling on July 2, said nothing was communicated to them and there was no information on the website.

“[My husband and I] are both doctors. We don’t have time to travel up and down to Bangalore if there is a postponement.

Also, we would have liked to see if our son has gotten a seat through CET before deciding whether to take a seat through COMEDK,” the parent, who wished to remain anonymous, said.

The COMEDK website does specify details of seat surrender. Candidates can surrender seats they do not wish to retain between July 11 and 13.
