Former Karnataka Minister H. Halappa, facing a rape charge, on Sunday appeared before a top official of the State CID, which is investigating the case.

Mr. Halappa appeared before DIG (CID) K.S.R. Charan Reddy for giving statement in the alleged rape case, police said.

The alleged victim and her husband had lodged an FIR, stating that Mr. Halappa had raped her some months ago at her house in Shimoga.

Mr. Halappa had resigned as Minister of Food and Civil Supplies after a media report on the alleged incident. He has dismissed the charge as baseless and said it was a political ploy by his adversaries.

While there was speculation that Mr. Halappa had gone missing, Mr. Reddy stated he was not absconding according to them and would be called for recording of statement when needed.
