Karnatak University convocation on Sunday

The 66th annual convocation of Karnatak University, Dharwad, will be held at Gandhi Bhavan on the university campus here on May 22.

University Vice-Chancellor Pramod B. Gai told presspersons here on Wednesday that Governor and Chancellor of universities Vajubhai Vala would confer degree certificates on successful candidates. Union Minister for Science and Technology Harshvardhan would deliver the convocation address. Higher Education Minister and Pro Chancellor T.B. Jayachandra would also take part in the convocation.

The convocation would be held at 11 a.m. Rank holders, Academic Council members, Syndicate members and Ph.D degree holders would be taking out a convocation procession from the Administrative Block at 10.50 a.m. to reach the Gandhi Bhavan for the stage programme at 11 a.m.

Later, the Governor would be conferring honorary doctorates, certificates, gold medals and cash rewards, he said.

On this occasion, 191 gold medals for rank holders from various departments, 41 citations, 24 scholarships, 48 additional scholarships and Ph.D degree certificates would be given.

A total of 23,932 candidates would be given degree certificates during the convocation which includes, 86 Ph.Ds, four M.Phil degrees, 4,765 post-graduation degrees, 18,703 under-graduate degrees, 51 Law degrees, 181 diploma certificates and 142 certified course certificates. As many as 456 candidates would be receiving degree certificates in person, while 23,476 would be receiving awards in absentia.

The list of the candidates to be conferred honorary doctorates would be disclosed during the convocation, he added.

Answering a query, Mr. Gai said that several applications recommending the names of seers, doctors, litterateurs and social activists for honorary doctorates have been received. However, the list of the candidates for the honorary award would be selected by a three-member committee formed by the Governor. And, no politician has figured in this list, he added.
