Senior Kannada poet V.C. Airsang has stressed the need for Kannadigas of mainland Karnataka to focus more on improving the condition of Kannada, culture and the people of the boundary areas.
Delivering the presidential address at the 11th Dharwad Zilla Kannada Sahitya Sammelan here on Saturday, Mr. Airasang said the condition of the Kannada-speaking people in boundary areas was not encouraging.
As a result, Kannada and its culture in those areas was facing the threat of going extinct.
Even government schemes for boundary areas failed to yield expected results. Therefore, it was time that the people of mainland Karnataka help their fellow Kannadigas residing in the boundary areas.
Batting in favour of obeying metrical pattern in poetry, Mr. Airsang said the trend of free verse harmed poetry in Kannada.
“The real beauty of poetry lies in writing obeying the metrical pattern. Such poetry created from the time of Kaviraja Marga of Nripatunga to the Mankutimmana Kagga of DVG has enriched Kannada literature. Therefore, the poets should always stress on obeying the metrical pattern while writing poems,” he said.
Earlier, in his keynote address, writer Shantinath Dibbad said that literature should promote harmony and tolerance.
