The elections for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Kalaburagi City Corporation (KCC) will be held in Kalaburagi on April 6.
Official sources told The Hindu in Kalaburagi on Tuesday that the elections for the members of different standing committees and its Chairpersons would also be held on the same day.
While the post of Mayor is reserved for General category, the Deputy Mayor post has been reserved for he Scheduled Tribe (women).
There are many contenders from both the ruling and opposition parties for the post of Mayor, but Sharanamma Yellapa Naikodi of Congress is all set to be elected as the Deputy Mayor since she is the only women Corporator belonging to the Scheduled Tribe in the city corporation.
Two-time corporator and a close confident of the Municipal Administration and Minority Affairs Minister Bhimreddy Patil, elected from ward no. 15 is all set to be chosen by the Congress as its candidate for the post of Mayor. The Congress party has taken a decision to field a non-muslim and preferably a Lingayat candidate for the top post since the party has chosen Asgar Chulbul as the party nominee for the post of chairman of the Kalaburagi Urban Development Authority.
Others in the race for the post of Mayor in Congress party included Sharan Modi, a close follower of former Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh, elected from Ward No. 17 and Mallikarjun Tengli elected from Ward No 29. The names of senior BJP corporator Basavaraj Nasi and Shivanand Ashtagi is going around in the opposition camp for the post of Mayor in the city corporation.
Although the Congress party with 23 members does not have a clear majority in the house of 55, the fragmented opposition and an entire chunk of eight Independents supporting the Congress has bolstered its number in the corporation. Besides this, many corporators who were elected on the erstwhile KJP and Janata Dal (S) have also shifted their allegiance to the Congress by extending their support.
