Municipal Administration and Minority Welfare Minister Qamarul Islam has said that there are positive signals from the Union government on declaring Kalaburagi as a smart city. “We hope to get good news from the Centre soon,” he said.

Speaking after unfurling the national flag to mark the 66th Republic Day celebrations in Kalaburagi on Monday, the Minister thanked Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for giving first priority for Kalaburagi to be declared as a smart city in the proposal submitted to the Union government.

As precursor to the declaration, the Minister said that the State government and the Hyderabad Karnataka Region Development Board had taken several measures to improve infrastructure facilities here. He said that a concerted cleanliness drive would be launched on February 1, with the door-to-door collection of garbage.

Solid waste disposal would be taken up in a more scientific manner, he said. Children from various schools gave a dance performance. After his ceremonial speech, in error-free Kannada, Mr. Islam honoured freedom fighters and those who had achieved laurels in different fields. Government servants, selected for the ‘Sarvotama Seva Prasashti’, were also honoured.
