Justice Vikramjit Sen is set to retire as Supreme Court judge this month.

The Law Department is said to be strongly batting for Justice Vikramjit Sen for the post of Lokayukta, though two other names are also doing the rounds. He is the sitting judge of the Supreme Court and attains superannuation by the end of this month.

The other names doing the rounds are that of S.R. Nayak, Chairman Karnataka State Law Commission and former Chief of the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC), and Cyriac Joseph, Acting Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission. Sources in the Law Department said attempts were being made to contact Justice Sen and appeal to him to accept the offer. Justice Sen, appointed as acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka in 2011, took oath as Judge, Supreme Court, on December 24, 2012.

The meeting to discuss appointment of Lokayukta, which was scheduled for Monday, has been postponed to January, according to Law Minister T.B. Jayachandra.

When asked about the reports on government favouring the candidature of Justice Sen, Mr. Jayachandra said: “I am not even a part of the high-level committee.”
